Students will make pizzas in small group "hands on" activity. Students will conduct survey to determine the favorite class pizza recipe. Students will graph the results of the survey.
Anticipatory Set:

Teacher may want to introduce this lesson by having the students close their eyes while the teacher places before them one of the following: a bland healthy snack, a unhealthy tasty snack, or a healthy tasty snack. The students are then told to open their eyes and try the snack. Responses to the various snacks are then discussed.

The teacher may also wish to don chef's clothing and perhaps a fake Italian accent for this activity.

Input:

The teacher will explain what their snacks were and describe why or why not they were healthy. The teacher will introduce the food pyramid, explain the different food categories, and explain the concept of balanced nutrition.

The teacher will give directions and classroom expectations for the pizza-making activity. IICOHOH web site may be used if a projector is available.

Guided Lesson:
The class is to be divided into small groups of 3 to 4 students. The teacher will present the students with a table of various healthy ingredients from which to chose. The groups will chose a combination of 4 to 5 ingredients for their pizza. The students will fill out their choices on the recipe sheet. The students will make their pizzas following the directions found on the IICOMOH web site. The pizzas are to be cut up into enough slices to permit all students a sample. The each small group will then fill out their opinion to the pizza on their survey table. Last the students will graph the total class preferences.
Individual Practice:
Students will design and make their pizzas. Students will fill out pizza tasting survey table. Students will make individual graph of whole class preferences.
